BASELINE

CHALLENGE

Keeping potential users who were seeking more modern websites.

Keeping potential users who were seeking more modern websites.

Our baseline resume builder, a core SaaS product, hadn’t been updated since 2012 except for minor optimization. Meanwhile, newer sites with modern designs, more templates, colors, fonts, and features were attracting more potential customers.

BASELINE

A wizard builder, where users can input their work experience, education, and other relevant details. The site will assist them in crafting content that transforms this information into a polished resume.

RESEARCH

Discovering which features users want with usability testing.

Discovering which features users want with usability testing.

The baseline usability study involved 10 unmoderated users. Key survey requests included: resume preview, live editing, and more template options. Users also highly suggested updating the website visuals.

SOLUTION

Modernize the resume builder packed with requested new features.

Modernize the resume builder packed with requested new features.

We analyzed competitor resume builders to spot missing and improvable features. The new design would focus on the large resume preview, which was the top user favorite.

UPDATED DESIGNS
Feedback indicating that the builder appeared outdated prompted us to revamp the website for a more contemporary look.

INTERSTITIAL PAGES
These pages were added to help with form fatigue and ready users for the next section.

LARGE RESUME PREVIEW
The main focus on the rebrand as this was the most highly requested feature from users.

JOB TITLE SEARCH
Search bar added to locate bullet points by job title. This allows users to complete their resume with more accurate generated writing content.

RESULTS

Rebrand increased users registrations by 10-15%, but conversion rates dropped.

Rebrand increased users registrations by 10-15%, but conversion rates dropped.

An A/B test of the new designs initially increased registrations by 10-15%, but completed resume purchases declined. We realized that while the UX Researcher provided valuable user insights, these didn’t directly shape business strategy. It was hard to separate research from execution and to tell if the problem was flawed data or how the team used it during development. Positive feedback in controlled studies showed user interest under certain conditions but didn’t ensure commercial success after launch.

Instead of scrapping the project, I recommended slowly introducing features as optimizations to test each one against the baseline. Many features succeeded and improved performance. Using these results, we revised the site for international users, boosting performance by 35% there.
